The McLaren driver just pipped team-mate and title rival Oscar Piastri for the top spot in the final moments of practice at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Norris, who took the title advantage from Piastri by a single point after his victory in the Mexican Grand Prix two weeks ago, outpaced the Australian by 0.023 seconds. Earlier in the session, Oscar Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair during the running before the sprint shootout scheduled for 6:30 PM GMT. The Red Bull star, the only other driver in realistic title contention, lying 36 points behind Norris, was classified in 17th position as his Red Bull team opted for a different programme. Verstappen's team-mate Yuki Tsunoda was the sole competitor to crash, though minor, when he lost control at the fourth corner early in the session. Tsunoda lost control over the exit kerbs before rotating through the run-off area, and was fortunate to avoid just a minor contact of the fence. The Ferrari of the seven-time champion also lost it, at the very end of the session, spinning around through the fast downhill Mergulho turn leading to the final bend on to the main straight. Hamilton wrapped up in 19th, one place behind team-mate the Monegasque driver. The McLaren drivers were significantly quicker of the remaining drivers, with Nico Hulkenberg's car third fastest, 0.619secs slower than Piastri's best. Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso was fourth quickest, with Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto ahead of Mercedes' Russell and the Alpine of Gasly and the Williams of Carlos Sainz.
