‘Every minor detail – execute them’: Guruzeta’s path from rehabilitation to success with the Basque club

The initial occasion Gorka Guruzeta played in England, an 18-year-old representing the reserve team against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at Adams Park in September 2015, he hit the target. During his subsequent match he played in England, against Sunderland two months later, he scored. His third outing, against Manchester City six weeks after that, indeed, he did it once more. Upon his comeback to the northwest to take on Manchester United at Leigh’s ground in 2017, he scored again. An excellent finish, as well. “Truly,” he says, “it’s a top-class goal I’ve netted.” Thus the club did their duty: they took him off.

“I got well angry,” the forward says, then chuckling. “There must be a video somewhere. Our match against United and I performed well. They kept me out of the final 45 minutes: my contract wasn’t finalized agreement, I was scoring goals, speculation was rife, it’s typical. I don’t know about the Magpies’ pursuit, but I recall seeing about Manchester United, the typical thing. I have no idea the validity, but even if they had called, my desire was to remain at Bilbao. I feel lucky to be here.”

At the facility, the Basque Country, the morning session is ready to commence; post-session, the short journey to the airport and another flight to Britain, on this occasion to play Newcastle in the Champions League on midweek. The player believed it challenging enough just to earn a spot and he was right. The son of the former Real Sociedad player the former professional and a regular attendee at the club that are now his rivals, Guruzeta is a graduate of Antiguoko, the local academy that nurtured Mikel Arteta, the former star and the Bournemouth manager. He joined Athletic at his teens but after making his senior debut in the 2018 season, he experienced a ACL injury, being released, a drop in category and a return before he could earn his place, making his comeback to live the best days of his career.

“You go into the academy not expecting to reach the senior squad but each step you advance through you’re remaining and you can notice the proximity. You make it and … you have to leave.” He featured briefly in six matches in six games between his debut and that period. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches at that level and my knee gave way.

“It was a huge blow but In retrospect as a turning point because it shifted the way I saw things. Healing from a serious ailment is hard, but it’s beneficial. You cultivate routines you didn’t have. It’s not about neglect, but I attended practice and then go home, typical youth behavior. In the facility, facilities are comprehensive, so take full advantage. Practice, prevention. Hit the weights. If your hips aren’t balanced, address that. With decent ankle function, enhance it further. All those ‘silly things’: perform them.

“Among professionals you’re going to face physical challenges who have crashed into players 200,000 times. Highly robust. I look at photos of me before: I had slender legs. So what happens, happens. Present-day images and it’s totally different. Injury made me see that. Training finishes, but there’s more to do. Teammates are set, really ready; the same applies.”

Minutes are crucial. He left upset in the pandemic season, in his early twenties, dropping into the second division. During his Sabadell spell in 2020-21, he netted three goals in forty appearances. During his Amorebieta stint in the second half of 2021-22, the he found his form. “Many experience this: temporary moves, ended deals. With a turnaround, work, believe, and should the time come they need someone where you play, they might come back for you. Readiness is vital. When the opportunity came, it was a dream come true. To then win the Copa del Rey, play in Europe, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”
